A Scam from Start to Finish

Introduction:
The following is the full conversation between myself & a Nigerian scammer known as Kelly. It is worth noting that he didn't actually reply to my advert, as it didn't exist. I simply replied to him after receiving his address from one of our advertisers. The text on white background is mine, grey background is the scammer.

A Note from DI David Collings of Hampshire Police & Hampshire Horsewatch:
The following is illustrative of the length unscrupulous people will go to to steal your money/property. Once again there is no such thing as "something for nothing"," a free lunch". DON'T GET INVOLVED.

I appreciate that there are many genuine people out there trying to sell property and equally people who want to buy cheaply and reasonably priced goods. Only YOU the buyer can make the judgment call and YOU the seller may have to establish that you are genuine.

The message is one of crime prevention and reduction…don't become a victim…….If you do…. you will get sympathy but little else as the likelihood of recovering money and property is nil……..and the criminals will be the only victors!!

Thanks for your Email re my saddle for sale.

As you can see in the photo, it is in excellent condition & hardly used. The price I am asking is £150 pounds & a cheque would be fine.

Are you in the area, if not I would have add postage to the price.

I hope this is what you are looking for.

Thanks for your prompt reply.

I am so sorry for the late reply. i am well please that i had the honour of doing bussiness with you and that you have agreed to sell me your Panther saddle, i thank you for your understanding and acceptance to do bussiness with me, thanks. Well, am okay with the price of your saddle and also l want to tell you that i now feel free in the purchase which i promise to fasten things up. Let me have your full contact address and phone number where the cheque would be mailed to. Also the exact name to be addressed on it. The saddle would be pick up by my shipping company immediately there is a confirmation of payment, they would also attest to every necessary document on my behalf. Ive immediately contacted my patner over there thats going to make the payment to you on my behalf. However there are few things i want to explain to you in this mail, which actually made the mail important and i would want you to handle everything with all honesty and sincerity as we have started.

My client is going to make a payment of £3,000 to you, which is over the amount for your saddle. But ive already told him he money cover sum for the saddle and the shippingarrangement. Therefore he has promised to raise the check and get it across to you ASAP. Why im explaining this to you now is the need to let to you know after colllecting the payment and get it cashed that you will need to send the balance of the money to my shipper after you must have deducted the money for your dressage saddle of it after you do that you can contact him also through is email:coscoshipping@dbzmail.com You will send the remaining balance to my shipper thru Western union Money Transfer so as to facilitate easy pick-up of the saddle at your location. Editor Note: The above numbers were contacted to warn them, but would not have cleared the cheque anyway!
My Number is: ****************

I got informed by my client that the cheque has been sent to you and I want you to notify me as soon as you recieve the cheque.

After 9 Days the cheque arrived.

The bank confirms it is worthless, but could have be paid in if they hadn't been informed. If paid in, money could be withdrawn after 3 days. The fraud wouldn't be spotted until the cheque had been returned to the issuing bank, minimum 6 days, probably longer. I would then be out of pocket to the sum of £4400!

Hi Kelly

I'm afraid that I've got some bad news. I had a cash buyer interested in my saddle, but told him to wait as I was expecting payment from you.

Payment hadn't arrived on Friday (9 days), so I let the saddle go, but then your cheque arrived this morning.

I assume that you would like me to tear up the cheque?

Sorry to waste your time.
I am so surprise to hear that you have sold the saddle becos my client who had send the check died in gassly car accident last week and he had shortly before he die told his childrn that he was not owing anybody include me any debt and that the check was made out to you as a payment for the debt he was owing me, so you see if you return the check back to me or torn it up, it will be useless becos the check will be carring your name and thre i can go and ask for another, and there is no way where i will be able to get the family issue out another check to me.

So please i want to beg you to try and consider me here by helping in cashing the check and then i will greatly give out a sum of 100 pounds to you as compensation for the stress ,i am going to put you thru ,so i want to ask you for this great assistance and consideration here and put yourself in my shoe.

So i hope to read from you with your response to this mail,as i pray that my requst will be greatly considered by you please.Thanks.

Hi Kelly

Really sorry to hear your bad news about your friend.

Lets get this right, I have a cheque for £4500 made out to me, which is rightfully yours. You want me to cash the cheque, keep £100 & wire the balance of £4400.

I just don't feel right taking your money, so why don't I just endorse the cheque & forward it to you?

I would be very happy to do this for you at this sad time.
Please, try and understand why i need your assisitance becos even if you endourse a check and send it back to i can't be allow to cash it right here in south africa where i am, becos i will have to wait for two good working month before the will clear and another two week before i can finally get the cash in my hand ,and this i don't want to go thru ,so that is why i really need you to help me out,as i said if is becos of the stress and transportation i am willing to add an extra 100 pounds to you making it 200 pounds as compensation and the fee for your labour towards helping me out.so please do try and get the check cashed today and deduct whatever is the bank charges from that which you will be sending back to me.

So i hope to read from you once you have cashed the check.I will so appreciate if it is done soonest.Thanks.

Dear Kelly

I have some very bad news for you.

Just as I was leaving on holiday this morning, I had an urgent phone call from my bank to inform that the cheque was a forgery & was worthless. I was stunned by this news & felt I had to inform you as soon as possible. If they had called five minutes later, I would have left & missed the call, which would have made a very expensive holiday!

I have copied this Email to your late business partners Email address, which may help you to obtain a repayment from his family.

Your lost Emails have now been recovered, but are now obviously worthless.

I wish you every success in recovering your money.

Best of luck for the future.

Another Email was received from one of our users giving the same shipping agent, who had allegedly died in the car crash!

Dear Kelly

I've just received another Email from one of our users & it seems your partner has come back to life!

I thought it only fair to let you know that my saddle didn't exist & I am actually the Webmaster of the NFED. Our whole conversation has been published on the Website as a warning & the scam has now been well covered in newspapers, radio & TV. Your input was invaluable in helping us to inform people of this scam.

Thanks also for the entertainment & the cheque for £4000, which by the way was confirmed by the bank as a forgery on the day that I received it.

Yours

Steve Kitcher

Please pass this information on to everyone that you know, although it seems pretty easy to spot at the moment, they could easily refine this scam. Better english, smaller amounts, it could become almost believable!
