Stolen dog and puppies in Kent

Hi, first post here (although I do get the hampshire updates to may email) I felt I had to register here as the Horsewatch community seem far better at getting the word out to people regarding rural theft than most other crime prevention sites.

My friend had her dog and newborn puppies stolen this week from Kent. We have a website set up regarding the theft, and it is on the doglost.co.uk pages. The crime reference number is CRN YY/9056-13 it was registered with the Kent police.

We are trying to make the dog and her pups too hot to handle, by getting it facebooked and tweeted all over the place, but concentration in the Kent/East Sussex/ area is the most obvious. Please see:
http://www.doglost.co.uk/dog-blog.php?dogId=52354

Thank you for your time.

NFED is Supporting Gut Feeling Week. May 13th to 19th 2013

It is estimated that 1 in 100 people have coeliac disease, but only 10-15% of these have been diagnosed. This means that around 70 of the daily NFED users could have undiagnosed coeliac disease.

Hopefully by supporting the Coeliac UK Gut Feeling Week we can help to increase awareness, spur those with the disease on into getting a proper diagnosis. This in turn will make them feel much better, have more energy to enjoy their horses, whilst preventing further complications such as stomach cancer & osteoporosis later in life.

I was diagnosed in November 2011 after many years of suffering & falsely being told by a doctor some 14 years previously that it was due to a twisted gut. Since being correctly diagnosed I have completely removed gluten from my diet, this has transformed my life & removed all the associated symptoms. There isn’t a cure for coeliac disease, only a lifelong gluten free diet & this really does mean completely gluten free.

If any of the symptoms below sound familiar, you must make an appointment to see your GP. Initial diagnosis is by blood test which will check for the antibodies associated with coeliac disease. To ensure accurate results, you must continue to eat foods containing gluten for at least 6 weeks before the test. If the antibodies are present, further tests & a biopsy will be arranged to confirm the diagnosis.

Prior to diagnosis, my small intestine was badly damaged, so nutrients weren’t being absorbed. I was always tired & hungry but after 18 months without gluten this has now healed completely. I can now ride all day on a good breakfast & weigh around a stone & a half lighter. A gluten free diet is very healthy providing the processed foods are avoided (many of the processed GF foods are high in fat & sugar) & who needs beer anyway when cider is gluten free!

I’ve copied some very basic information from www.coeliac.org.uk below. If you think any of this may apply to you or someone you know, get them to see their GP & see the Coeliac UK website for further details.

It is very important to be diagnosed properly, as they will check for other complications. If confirmed as coeliac, you will also receive help with your diet from a dietician, annual check-ups & the basics such as bread & cereal on prescription.

If I can help to reassure anyone with my experiences, feel free to give me a call on my mobile 07826 857124.

Steve

What is Coeliac Disease

Coeliac disease (pronounced see-liac, spelt celiac disease in other countries) is an autoimmune disease. Gluten, which is found in wheat, barley and rye triggers an immune reaction in people with coeliac disease. This means that eating gluten damages the lining of the small intestine. Other parts of the body may be affected.

What are the Symptoms
The symptoms of coeliac disease vary from person to person and can range from very mild to severe.

Possible symptoms may include:
•diarrhoea, excessive wind, and/or constipation
•persistent or unexplained gastrointestinal symptoms, such as nausea and vomiting
•recurrent stomach pain, cramping or bloating
•any combination of iron, vitamin B12 or folic acid deficiency
•tiredness and/or headaches
•weight loss (but not in all cases)

Common confusion

Some symptoms may be mistaken as Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or wheat intolerance. Stress or getting older can also be a cause of confusion.
Contrary to popular belief, you do not need to be underweight or have lost weight to have coeliac disease. Most people are of normal weight or even overweight at diagnosis.

WHAT SHOULD I DO IF I THINK I HAVE COELIAC DISEASE?
If you think you or your child has coeliac disease, you must keep eating gluten and speak to your GP for advice. See www.coeliac.org.uk for further information.

New Forest Equine Forum Response to the NFNPA Landscape Character Assessment document

The Equine Forum met with Steve Avery yesterday evening in order to express their serious concern with the Landscape documentation and consultation.

The Chairman, Fiona Macdonald, firstly said that she personally was very disappointed with the fact that she only found out about the Landscape Character Assessment document and consultation by chance from a One Voice email, and was disturbed to find it contained numerous inaccurate references to horse keeping in the New Forest and the effects on the landscape in language which was very reminiscent of the 2008 proposals on Recreational Horse keeping which stirred up so much negative emotion in the Forest.

After a frank and robust discussion it has been decided that the Equine Forum will once again work with the NPA specifically on the equine part of the proposals to produce a part of the documentation which will hopefully satisfy both sides, as was done with the Supplementary Planning Document for Recreational Horse Keeping.

Burglaries in East Dorset

A spate of burglaries have recently been committed during the day, mainly in the afternoons, in the East Dorset area, particularly around St Leonards, St Ives, Ferndown, Ringwood and West Moors areas which are believed to be linked. Properties are mostly large detached houses in spacious grounds which are situated close to main roads. These involve tidy searches with the offenders looking for jewellery and expensive items where the occupants have been away or elderly and staying in care homes. Are you an owner of a similar property or do you know of such similar properties/vulnerable persons?

It is suspected that offenders are using a car and recently a White Audi A1, part registration --12 HYC, has been seen in suspicious circumstances at a recent burglary. Another car that may be involved is a Red Ford Galaxy, part registration S---TBA.

Dorset Police are very interested in sightings of these vehicles and if you see a person or vehicle acting suspiciously then please dial 999 immediately, noting any descriptions, vehicle details and direction of travel.

We strongly recommend your property has the appearance of being occupied, leave a vehicle in the drive where possible and ask trusted friends and family to check your property regularly.

A further message will be sent out in the next day with crime prevention advice.

Many Thanks

Dorset Police

BEWARE of ONLINE SURVEYS

Hampshire County Council sent the following message:

Consumers shopping online are advised to be careful when a survey appears in a ‘pop-up’ advertisement. A concern has been raised by a Hampshire resident who decided to complete a customer survey that appeared in this way. The questionnaire was short and straightforward, and an offer was in place to enter the consumer in a prize draw. On completion, the consumer was asked to provide their mobile phone number.

Some time later, the consumer began to receive text messages inviting him to take part in a gambling game which he ignored. However, he continued to receive text messages including one that advised he had been entered into a weekly prize draw and would be charged £4.50 every week unless he replied ‘STOP’. The consumer decided it was not good practice to respond to a unsolicited text message, and reported this matter to his mobile phone provider.

It transpired the consumer had been charged £58.50 to his mobile phone contract by the scammer. With intervention from his provider, the subscription was cancelled and a refund was received.

Hampshire County Council Trading Standards Service warns consumers to be alert when ordering goods online, and not to click on any pop-up advertisements or complete surveys that appear in this way.

Please report any concerns to:
Citizens Advice Consumer Helpline on

Beware of Scammers Answering Tack Wanted Ads

I’ve had a report regarding someone answering tack wanted ads, insisting on bank transfer payments, then not sending the goods. As they are replying to ads, not advertising, I don’t have the details, but they are apparently trying this scam on most popular equestrian sites.

We would advise anyone buying goods that are going to be posted to use PayPal. Don’t be tricked into using bank transfer unless you know the seller. The following is in the site terms of use.

We would advise anyone buying tack or goods that cannot be collect in person from an unknown seller, to consider using Paypal as a method of payment. If the goods do not arrive, you can then raise a dispute through Paypal, it is then the sellers responsibility to provide Paypal with proof of postage. Although bank transfer is an easy payment method, unlike Paypal, payments cannot be reversed. If goods are lost in the post or do not arrive for any reason, it is the sellers responsibility unless alternative arrangements have been previously agreed upon between the two parties. Anyone found or suspected of acting dishonestly may be blocked from posting further free ads.

Classifieds Clean Up!

I’ve just had a long overdue clean-up of the classifieds & have removed around 400 ads marked as sold, found, loaned etc. There are still a few marked as sold subject to collection or similar, obviously I don’t want to delete any that are still needed, so if you have any like this, please remove them or let me know.

The control panel now prompts people to remove ads, rather than mark them as sold. I know it’s nice to leave a message, but viewers really only want to see ads that are still available, this is a regular cause of complaints.

Changes to the NFED Facebook Page

Over the last few months, Facebook has been making some changes which drastically reduced the number of FB users receiving NFED updates. There is an option to pay to promote posts so that more people would see them, but this can cost in the region of £50 to reach all of our followers over two day period. Although I do occasionally use this to promote the site, regular use would mean an increase in advert prices, which I don’t intend doing. Further changes this week, resulted in problems with adverts that didn’t have a photo showing random images from the advert web page.

I’ve tried some new software, which although worked ok & solved the photo problem, reduced the number of people seeing each post even further.

I am now running the original software, but posting as “Status Updates” rather than “Shared Links”.

On the down side, this means that only text is shown & photos are no longer included, but a link is provided to the main advert or news item.

On the upside, there was an immediate five times increase in the number of users receiving each post.

Obviously, I don’t want to flood the system & take over people’s news pages as this will only result in a drop in followers.

This is how it works.

There are total of three feeds which go out to Facebook & Twitter;
1: Featured Classifieds
2: Latest News
3: Forthcoming events

Each feed can post one new item per half hour, so if there are new items on all feeds, it is possible to receive three updates at once.

The software will only post status updates between 08.00 am & 11.00pm, 7 days per week. This should stop updates being posted to your phones overnight.

Hopefully that will keep everything running smoothly until Facebook changes things again!

Business News - New Forest Farrier Billy Scott Passes Higher Level Examination.

<img alt="" border="0" src="http://www.nfed.co.uk/directory/upload/1217.jpg"><br />
Big congratulations to Billy Scott who has passed his Higher Level exam in Farriery, which now makes him a AWCF or an Associate of the Worshipful Company of Farriers. <br />
<br />
Billy passed his Diploma of the Worshipful Company of Farriers in spring 2007 and for the past 14 months has been studying hard towards his Associates exam. The Diploma is the modern day UK qualification you receive after passing your exams at the end of your farriery apprenticeship, the Associate exam can only be taken at least two years after the Diploma. <br />
<br />
What Are The Examiners Looking For?<br />
They are looking for you to convince them that you have an in depth knowledge of anatomy, conditions and diseases of the foot, and how conformation affects the gait and the foot and vice versa. You need to show traditional forging skills and be able to apply them to an individual horse. You need to show a range of shoemaking skills in different materials including fabricating. They are assessing your ability to think on your feet when confronted with a task that you might not have experienced. You need to be able to use and have an opinion on the modern materials e.g. various types of pads and hoof repair plastics. You need to be comfortable looking at x-rays and assessing a horse with a veterinary surgeon. The veterinary examiner is looking to see if you could partner him in treating farriery related conditions. The farrier examiners are looking to see whether they could refer a case to you. <br />
This is assessed under strict exam condition. The practical part including modern materials is 3hrs long. The theory part is 2.5hour written essay examination, then a total of 1hour 20minute oral examinations which include trot ups and x ray assessments.<br />
<br />
We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our customers, friends and family for all their patience, encouragement and support through this period. Without you all it would never have been possible!

Please be aware that there may be thefts of lambs and piglets occurring in the Stour valley area following the discovery of a lamb with a docked tail in amongst some undocked ones. The lamb was very young and the owner has not been traced yet.
This afternoon I came out of my stable to see two men coming through the gate to our yard. On seeing me, one dashed back out and stood on other side of hedge. Other man asked me if any hay for sale. They then left in a car which was parked a bit further down the road. Although it was behind the hedge, I think it was dark green polo. They may have had their eye on my saddle which was sitting outside my stable.

Posted on behalf of NFPBCS, CDA and Verderers

Arrangements for Stallion and Colt Inspections, Beaulieu Road, Saturday 20 April

The enlarged show ring is being used. Loose movement will be part of the inspection.

The morning will begin at 9 am with the Verderers inspecting six already-licensed stallions (those under five years old and/or not currently in the scheme) for possible selection to run the Forest this summer.

At 10 am, the Society will begin the inspections of the young colts. The first three to be looked at will be those who have been put forward as potential colts to run the Forest. They will only be looked at once, by a combined Society/Verderers panel.

The stud colts will then follow on, so it will be from about 10.30, and there are 14 of them.

Loss of service on 7th April & Classifieds Software Trial

Last Friday I ran some server software updates which turned out to be incompatible with the existing forums & event diary, making them unusable for a few hours. The software was rolled back & everything came back to life, much to my relief!

The software updates were to trial some new classifieds software & I have now reached a point where both the old & new programs are running successfully.

New Classifieds & Directory Software
The existing classifieds software dates back to 2002. Although very basic, it is fast & reliable but lacks many of the features that people now expect to find on a classifieds site. For most of these missing features I have found ways to get around them, for example; the software won’t resize photos, but we offer to do this for you. There is only a single photo option, but we can manually add a gallery & so on.

The new software has all of the latest features, photo resizing, multiple photos, slide shows, Youtube videos, pedigree options, private messaging system, voting & far more. It would also put the business directory & classifieds together, which would greatly simplify everything at my end.

On the downside, it is more complicated to use, many of the photos that are emailed to me at the moment, would still be too large. When I resize a photo, I will crop & edit the photo, this won’t be done on an automated system. If the photo is mainly field & a small horse in the corner that is what will be uploaded, whilst at the moment I would just crop to the horse, lighten, darken & sharpen as required.

I will continue to work on the new system in the background, if & when we switched over there would have to be a period of several months where both system were running, as the existing ads cannot be transferred over.

I fully appreciate that the classifieds are very successful as they are. Much of this may well be down to the simplicity & there’s a lot to be said for “if it aint broke, don’t fix it”. Although I have paid quite a lot for the new software, if at the end of the exercise if we decide to stay with the old system, that’s fine at least I will have an answer for the anyone that tells me the classifieds are out of date.

As usual, any comments or thoughts greatly appreciated

The New Forest National Park Authority has confirmed its position on cycling in view of comments received from local residents and event organisers.

Cycling is an important way for people to get around the Forest, whether for work or pleasure, and a great way to enjoy its special qualities. We welcome responsible cycling and in particular continue to support initiatives that encourage people to swap their cars for sustainable transport.

National Park members, however, have noted how the nature of cycling events has changed in recent years and are concerned that the increasing frequency and scale of large non-competitive events may be becoming incompatible with the New Forest National Park’s aims.
The Authority will therefore be putting in place a number of measures, where they fall within our remit, but are also looking to others, such as the Highways Authority, police and New Forest District Council’s Safety Advisory Group to play their part.

The New Forest National Park Authority will:
? Monitor large-scale events to ascertain if the current regulations are adequate
? Bring together a group of Forest organisations and cycling representatives to work with the existing Public Events and Safety Advisory Group (comprising the emergency services and New Forest District Council) to agree on a specific New Forest code of conduct for cyclists and New Forest charter for event organisers
? Work with partners to promote greater dialogue with local communities about these events
? Work with others to gather evidence about the impact of these events on the Forest, its residents and businesses.

We will actively monitor the situation and if we find evidence that the purposes of the Forest are being undermined we will consider calling for the authorisation and regulation of large scale cycling events.
