The agister has had shoot a foal today after a severe dog attack in the Boundway/Wootton area of the southern New Forest. The wounds had turned septic, so the attacked was thought to have occurred yesterday & was not reported.

why is it that there is still this problem with dogs again in the news etc. I have a lab i keep it on a lunge line when i take it for a walk in the forest as i know the my dog will go after rabbits as there i boom in the population this year as i have loads of them in my field .Anyway i say that if you own a dog no matter what sort it is there should be a dog licence to keep them and make it law to have them all chipped . I have had my dog grab around the neck 5 years ago by a GSD down the marshes at lymington lucky my husband got him off i shouted to the elderly owners but they took no notice and since then i have never gone back there . I love dogs but i feel even the most obedient dog can turn and bite or attack without any notice .As for stock on the forest dogs should be on a lead as then the owners know were there dog is , if it runs off and attacks a animal if they are out of eye shot the owners would not know . people seem to have dogs because there friends have one or they do not know what damage a dog can do .This is just my view . Its always the young foals that get attacked very sad indeed.

Just awful :( I think there should be more encouragment for visitors to think before letting their dogs off in the forest especially at this time of year, I do not agree that everyone should walk their dog on a lead, if that was the law I would not have a dog, dogs need to run and have freedom but should not be allowed to be a nuisance to others or cause harm to livestock in any way at all, think of how many dogs enjoy the freedom of a run in the forest everyday and the majority are not causing anyone or anything any harm..... again it is the owners who need to use a bit of common sense!

Sickening, too tragic for words. I too love dogs, but i really think that at this time of year, with very vulnerable foals & fawns being born, that certain breeds should be kept on a lead on the forest. My lurcher is a sweetheart, but i'm under no illusions that if he sees the unfamiliar sight of a gambolling foal, he will probably chase, & will not respond to voice or whistle, so he stays on a very long line. He has learned that when he wants to go for a whizz round he can do so very happily 'on the lunge' in a large circle, & he' soon exhausted! Its so sad that this poor mare nurtured this baby for so long & gave birth to a beautiful foal, only to have it mauled , how distressing for her, it's appalling & i'm sure , out of sight or not, the dog owner will have known that something went on.Where I walk, a certain man pulls up, opens the back of his car & out jump 2 rotties & a german shepherd, no control at all. They scare the s*** out of me nevermind the ponies, i've got his reg. just in case there is an incident!!

it was reported on the news last week that a farmer in the Minsted area had to shoot 3 dogs-one I think lived following an attach on his sheep-report said owner had to pay compensation and took responcibility
