What is the NFED

The NFED is a unique central resource for all equestrian information based in New Forest & covering all of Central Southern England. It exists in digital form only, but you are welcome to make hard copies of any sections that you may find useful.

Who runs the NFED

The site is owned by Claire & Steve Kitcher, run by Steve with input & advice from gratefully received from many others. ( Please see the "Meet the Team" page.) Having a single, full time administrator/editor/web editor means that if you have a problem or query, you won't be passed around and can always talk to Steve. As the site is run from home, there are no set office hours & you are welcome to call 365 days a year up until 9.00pm. If we are not at home, you can always leave a message or call the mobile.

Who benefits from the NFED

Anyone with an interest or love of horses, ponies, riding or driving. Particular those living in Central Southern England.

Is the NFED just for New Forest Ponies?

No. Although we breed New Forest ponies ourselves and are always pleased to promote or help anyone involved in NF ponies or commoning, the NFED is for all equestrian information.

What area does the NFED cover?

We are based at Sway in the the New Forest, but the NFED covers the whole of Hampshire, Dorset, Wiltshire, the Isle of Wight & well beyond. The classifieds regularly receive enquiries from all around the country & mainland europe.

How did it start?

Claire's first art Website was designed, built & launched in 1998 by myself. At the same time, I started producing the schedule for a friend, Sally Mace, who was secretary for the Bashley Horse show. It seemed a logical step to put the Bashley horse show on the Internet along with a schedule for downloading. Even though it was early days, the feed back was very good, so it seemed a good idea to offer the service to other local shows. The NFED has grown from this.

How do I become listed in the directory?

Go to the directory, click on the "Submit New Listing" link, fill in & submit the form.

My Business doesn't fit under any of the existing categories?

New categories can be added if required.

How much does it cost to be listed?

Standard listing cost £40 for 12 months. Full affiliate webpages are available for £10 per month, including a directory listing & preferential positioning in the directory A to Z, monthly updates & your own website address (NFED Subdomain). See the Business Promotion for full details.

Why is the directory no longer free?

The Business Directory was free of charge for 8 years with the intention of giving a fully comprehensive directory of equestrian services in the area and providing the very best service to our users. Although it sounds a great idea, it is not that easy. Keeping a directory up to date is a very difficult task when you do not have regular contact with the individuals or companies listed. A directory that is not kept up to date can cause more problems than no directory at all. By charging a nominal amount we have regular contact with all advertisers & can provide a far better service, whilst allowing them to take control of their listings for regular updates. Anyone can still add their name to the Phone Book free of charge.

Why is the Directory listed oldest at the top & the Classifieds Newest at the top?
The Business Directory has always run this way giving top position to the oldest & most loyal advertisers. Unlike the classifieds which are browsed regularly, people tend to go to the directory looking for a definite service in a particular area & will therefore take more time to find the correct person or business. The listings are listed alphabetically in the advertiser A to Z, the latest listing are also listed on the NFED homepage & can be searched, so a lower listing is not a disadvantage. As listings expire, all other listings move up the list.

How long will it take to become listed?
Approved Directory entries are normally posted within 48 hours of payment has being received

What is the Mailing List?

By joining the mailing list, you will receive the latest NFED updates & important news for the area by Email. You can unsubscribe whenever you like. Click Here for further details

Yes, see Affiliate pages.

Can I join the NFED?

Apart from Forum Membership, there is no NFED membership & it is open to everyone

How do I find anything?

The NFED has grown into a very large site. We have done our best to make navigation logical, but if you still have problems have a look at the site map, or use the search facilities.

Are the Classifieds successful?

Yes, generally very successful, see the Testimonials for a selection of users comments. The site receives thousands of visitors everyday, most of whom have a look through the classifieds. A lot of work goes on behind the scenes on search engine positioning and cross linking. We also subscribe to the Google adwords, paying for sponsored links on Google & paid ads & sponsored stories on Facebook. Featured ads are published on Facebook & Twitter via RSS feed. This said, we cannot work miracles: Providing the animal or item is saleable, it is up to the advertiser to create a good advert, post a good photograph with the correct price. If we could guarantee sales, we would be very rich!

Are the Classifieds Free?

The majority of approved adverts are completely free of charge, whether a an advert requires payment or not depends on the type of advert & the value. Please see the price list below, further details can be seen in the Classifieds Guidelines & FAQ's

Advert Prices: The standard insertion fee for an NFED Classified advert submitted online is £8.99.

The standard fee applies to:

* All horses & ponies (equines) offered for sale or rehoming (regardless of value).
* All horses & ponies (equines) offered or loan ("loan" includes part loan, share, riding offered/rider wanted).
* All items & non equine animals with a value of £100 or greater
* Liveries or grazing offered.
* Animals at stud.
* Any Advert resubmitted within 8 weeks.

Providing the guidelines have been followed, the advert will be approved when the payment has been received. The advert details will be removed from the database if payment is not received within two days. The standard fee may be waived under certain conditions to give a free advert, see Guideline 4 for further details & conditions.

Free Adverts: The standard fee may be waived at the administrator’s discretion for wanted, offered with low value up to £99.99, (excluding equines). There is no automatic right or separate categories for free adverts. By allowing free use of our resources, the NFED, its sponsors & other paying advertisers are funding free adverts. To prevent abuse of the offer, the administrator must be completely satisfied by the legitimacy of the advert. If there are any doubts whatsoever, the criteria are not met, required information is not supplied or the advert is considered to be cheating the system in any way, the free offer will be withdrawn & the advert will be subject to the standard payment.

To qualify for a free advert..
Full contact details, prices & description must be supplied.
The same advert, animal or items must not have been advertised within the last 8 weeks.
The advertiser has not posted more than 15 free adverts in the previous 30 days.

Anyone found to be deliberately abusing or attempting to cheat the system, falsely advertising, being dishonest or causing problems, will have any existing free adverts removed without notice & will no longer be eligible further for free adverts.

Why do you charge for the classifieds?

The NFED is a business & has to be run as such to continue. All websites cost money to run, although smaller sites/hobby sites can be run very cheaply, as they grow they need far more resources, server space, bandwidth & take more time to manage, this does become expensive & has to be paid for. All successful sites have these expenses but how they are funded may differ.

The most popular way of funding is corporate & banner advertising. This can be very distracting & we consider unfair to advertisers. If an advertiser posts an advert, the viewer should be able to see the advert without having to read other unrelated adverts, Google ads, ect; we therefore keep corporate advertising to an absolute minimum with banners only available to a few advertisers local to the area & of interest to the site users.

Premium rate phone calls are used by some classified sites. The viewer has to contact the advertiser by phone, the phone call is diverted through a premium rate number & the proceeds pay for the site. To use this method the site really has to have national coverage to generate enough income, this wouldn’t work for a locally based specialist site such as the NFED. It would also remove the option of Email or text as all enquiries would have to come through the premium rate line.

Commission charges are used by auction sites such as EBay. To run this system, the site must know the final selling price to be able to calculate the commission owed. This system again would not work for us as sales take place off site.

Most of the NFED including all events, schedule downloads, forums & the majority of approved classifieds are completely free of charge. Advertisers posting wanted ads or selling goods (excluding equines) up to £99.99 pay nothing. As a comparison, the equivalent item sold on EBay for £99.99 would cost £1.00 insertion fee, plus £9.99 commission (10% of final price) making a total of £10.99.

For goods costing £100 or over, we charge a fixed insertion fee of £8.99. Again as a comparison, EBay will charge a £1.30 insertion fee, plus 10% of the final price up to £40.00, so a saddle sold for £400 will cost the standard £8.99 on NFED or £41.30 on EBay.

In conclusion, the NFED has to pay its way to survive. Over the years we have looked into many ways of achieving this & consider the present method to be reasonable & fair to all advertisers. It is safe & secure & keeps the site uncluttered, while offering the maximum flexibility for advertisers & site users.

How do I resize a photo for my classified advert?

Please see Photo Help for full details, examples, online photo resizer & photo editor.

Why don't new classified adverts show in What's New?

What's New only includes site updates that are carried out manually. Automated updates such as: Classified ads, Forum Postings or Event diary entries are not included, but may be included in the RSS feeds including Featured Ads.

I'm organising an event, can you help to promote it?

Yes, providing it is an open event, non-profit event or show you are welcome to enter the details in the event diary completely free of charge. Please remember to include contact details & allow 24 hours before the event is approved & can be seen by the public. If you would like to have your schedule, entry, sponsorship, form, etc on the site for downloading, please Email it to the usual address. Diary events will also appear on the NFED home, Twitter & Facebook pages 10 days before the day of the event to act as a reminder.
The event diary is intended for open events that are of interest to our users, whilst protecting the interests of our sponsors that make the NFED possible. We do not allow any commercial events i.e. shop sales, course hire, training or ticket events unless the individual, company or venue has a current listing in the NFED Directory. Website links are not permitted if the website contains services in competition with the NFED or its sponsors.

How do I get results & photos from my show on the results board?

Email or post the results (on disk) & photos to us & we will set it up for you, free of charge (Email is preferred). Unless by prior arrangement, the maximum number is 16 photos, all results must provided in MS Word or plain text. If you submit photos, it is your responsibility to ensure you have copyright or the photographers permission.

Where are the NFED offices?

There are no offices. It is run from our home in Sway, with everyone involved keeping in contact by Email.

How many visitors does the NFED get each day.

There are three main ways to provide statistics; hits, visitors & unique visitors. There are currently people using the site.

Hits.
Hits include every individual file downloaded or viewed which can give the ridiculously high numbers quoted on many sites. If hits were quoted for the NFED, it would be in the region of 20 million per month.

Visitor Counters
Visitor counters count each time a page is viewed, but can give false readings if a page is refreshed or revisited by the same person, again giving falsely high figures.

Unique Visitors
Counting unique visitors is the most accurate method available. The IP address & other details are registered to allow each visitor to be counted only once within a set time period (1 hour). This give lower, but far more accurate statistics. This is the method that we use & is the most accurate method available. If a visitor returns using the same connection/IP address, they are not recounted & refreshing a page does not falsely add visitors numbers.
It also counts page views separately, which is the number of pages (with the site meter included) viewed by each visitor. Not all pages have the counter, so these are ignored.

The graph below shows unique visitors in yellow & page views in orange for the previous seven days.

Why are not all the local shows in the diary?

The diary is user submitted, it is up to the show or event organisers to enter their own details in the diary. We will enter details if we are aware of an event.

Is the NFED run by Hampshire Police?

No, we are in regular contact through the Horsewatch scheme, & we have received several donations from Hampshire Police Authority. This has enabled us to sponsor further shows & therefore publicise the NFED.

I have made a mistake in the diary, how do I correct it?

Email the editor with full details & we will gladly correct it for you.

How do I add my show schedule to the downloads page?

Email the schedule, we will then add it to the page for you & let the mailing list know it is available.

Would the NFED sponsor our show?

Please contact us, it depends on the size of the kitty at the time!

Why are the results from the last show I attended not on the site?

The results are user submitted, in other words it is up to the show organisers to submit their results to us, we will then post them on results page. Of course, they may not be aware of this free service, so please tell them.

Who decides what is included on the NFED

We are always open to suggestions & welcome your comments through Email or the support forum. The sections that are run for other organisations such as the NFEA & Horsewatch, are run in agreement with the individual committees. There is no committee involved with the NFED & the editor has the final decision as to what is included.
